English
Welcome to Tenbury High School English Department
Aims
The overriding aim of the English Curriculum is to enable all pupils to develop to their full ability to use and understand English. Since language can be both spoken and written, this means the fullest possible development of capabilities in speaking, listening, reading and writing.
Work in English helps pupils' learning in all subjects and also equips them to participate in adult society.
We strive to foster a love of reading in all its many forms and develop pupils' ability to be creative, imaginative, observant and sensitive.
We will give pupils linguistic competence, confidence and awareness which enables them to understand themselves and others.
Poetry Slam
In the summer term Tenbury High was overtaken by Birmingham's former Poet Laureate Giovanni Esposito, or as he's more commonly known, Spoz. Bounding into the hall, full of lyrical energy and big ideas, he challenged year eight to answer the question,
"Who thinks poetry's boring?"
In response to the raised hands, Spoz treated pupils to lively performances of "Disco Dad" and "Ten and a Half", two of Spoz's many poems.
Following this introduction to the day, pupils took part in a workshop that helped to change their attitudes and pique their interest, and also helped them to write their own poems. These poems were then worked on and perfected throughout the day, to be performed in front of the year group and then voted on.
Only a few days later several of our pupils went to the Artrix Theatre in Bromsgrove to perform their poems in the Poetry Slam final for Worcestershire.
Spoz will be back next year to inspire some more budding poets.
